Travel Steals & Deals

Waikiki before winter
Tourism to Hawaii is rebounding after several years of decline, and that means hotel rates will rise next year. So consider traveling now, while several Honolulu hotels still offer special deals. At the Waikiki Beachcomber (800-622-4646), a $99.99 nightly rate includes accommodations for two and a choice of a daily breakfast buffet or a rental car. At the Aston Waikiki Joy (800-922-7866), a $99 nightly rate is valid until December 22, and includes accommodations for two and continental breakfast. And the golf package at the Alana Waikiki (800-367-6070) offers: three nights accommodations; three days rental of a Lincoln Town Car; two rounds of golf at Honolulu's newest course, and other golf amenities. The package costs $529 per person (double occupancy).

A Swiss escape
Switzerland is often a pricey destination for American travelers, but the "Great Swiss Escape" package goes a long way toward keeping costs down. For just $1 more than the applicable airfare, the Kemwel Group (800-933-1221) provides roundtrip Swissair flights to Geneva, Zurich or Basel; a seven-day car rental; and $10 worth of free calls home. Prices, based on two persons traveling together from New York or Boston, are just $589 for travel from November 1-December 14 and December 26-March 30, 1995. Single supplements cost $55.

Aspen in autumn
The swanky Rocky Mountains enclave of Aspen is blessed with crisp, clear weather and much lower prices before the snow falls and the skiers arrive. At the Ritz-Carlton Aspen (800-241-3333), for example, the "Quiet Autumn Special" package for $149 a night includes accommodations, morning cappuccino or cafe latte for two, a newspaper, and unlimited use of the lavish fitness center.

A passage to India
The "Best of India" from Orient Flexi-Pax Tours (800-545-5540) offers an 11-day tour package of the Subcontinent's top tourist attractions for $1,899 per person (double occupancy). The package includes roundtrip airfare from New York on Air India; accommodations in Bombay, Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra (home of the Taj Mahal); 14 meals; sightseeing excursions and all transportation within India. The price is valid for 11 departures between October 22 and April 8, 1995.

Polynesia in a hurry
Jet Vacations (800-538-0999) has a whirlwind 8-day vacation to the French Polynesian island of Moorea (home of Bali-Hai) for prices that start at $1,049 per person (double occupancy). The package includes roundtrip transportation from Los Angeles, airport transfers, and five nights accommodation. The prices are valid through December 24.
